Teacher Effects on Student Achievement and Height: A Cautionary Tale

چکیده
Estimates of teacher “value-added” suggest teachers vary substantially in their ability to promote student learning. Prompted by this finding, many states and school districts have adopted value-added measures as indicators job performance. In paper, we conduct a new test the validity models. Using administrative data from New York City, apply commonly estimated models an outcome cannot plausibly affect: height. We find standard deviation effects on height is nearly large that for math reading achievement, raising obvious questions about validity. Subsequent analysis finds these “effects” are largely spurious variation (noise), rather than bias resulting sorting unobserved factors related achievement. Given difficulty differentiating signal noise real-world effect estimates, paper serves cautionary tale use practice.
